Slowing Down and Reflecting During the Summer that Stood Still

During the summer, where time stood still, my task was to take a picture a day to help

capture my identity. To say that this summer was stressful is an understatement. By no means the same stress as trying to cram as much summer fun into the short, warm, fleeting, sunny days of a Michigan summer as we possibly can before returning to school. Instead, there was the stress of staying safe and healthy during a global-wide pandemic, not being able to go on vacation and see family and friends as planned, getting ready to bring a new baby into this crazy world, and wondering what the new school year would bring for everyone! It seemed that time had stood still and we were all caught in a never-ending bad dream.

Then, I began capturing my images for this assignment. It forced me to open my eyes and see the experience through the sweet innocence of my four littles. They were still playing, exploring, and seeking out new things on a daily basis. They were finding the joy in the little things in life and not bothered that more days were spent at home this summer. It gave me the opportunity to take a step back and enjoy exploring and discovering the world around us.

This experience made me realize that I am a maker. I enjoy being a maker. However, it is easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. I do not spend as much time making and innovating, as I would like. When I do find the time, I always have time constraints and get easily frustrated when things do not work out the way that I envisioned during that timeframe. Watching my kids explore, make, and play this summer made me realize that I need to take a step back and try not to cram so much into my schedule and simply enjoy spending time exploring the world around me and allowing this exploration to lead my creativity to grow and flourish, just like theirs!
